Geee I grew up two blocks away from that Dee's, and I didn't know that it was a" Hip Hop  Let's Get Ready To Rumble " kinda place .  I remeber going toooo... wait for it... ( DON CARLOS ) just off of state street and 9th south yum yum still had car hops too. Oh and yes I was a tripple decker kinda boy at dee's

I grew up a couple of blocks south of Dee's.  I used to meet my first real boyfriend there when we were 12 years old. (He lived just a half a block north)  Hamburgers we 12 cents then, I believe.  Mmmmmm! I can almost smell those burgers now!

But the greatest treat was when my family would get a big bag of fries there (the bags your whole dinner comes in) for 50 cents.  We didn't really eat out much, but that was great to take that home and eat it with our dinner.  Those were the good ole days!

BTW...Loved seeing Whimpy again, Paul!  And enjoying the vids on your profile...even if some are a little 'depressing'.

Ah yes the Dee's on 21st south.   This reminds me of some photos Sue and I bought at the farmers market from a lady that has photos of old signs.   We had to get the Dee Burger Clown,  Snelgroves Ice Cream and Nu-Crisp popcorn from the old stomping grounds.  They are really fun memories.  I attached a link to her web site in case you want to view some of the photos.

Thanks for that link, Ross! I remember walking by Dee's every day on my hike up to and back down from Irving Jr. Mom would never give me money to buy something and made me bring a packed lunch. It's probably a good thing because it would have just been an earlier start to my chunkiness.

Now that I think back on it, 21st South and Sugarhouse almost seemed to have more memorable signs than Downtown SLC. And Dee's predated McDonald's by a few years, didn't it?

My daughter's first little house was on Ramona Ave near 3rd East. She liked to call the area "Sugarhood".

I'm always amazed at what isn't there through that strip from Irving on down west on 21st any more.  Some of the buildings are there, but the names all seem to have all changed.

I can almost smell the waffs of sweet goodness coming out of NuCrisp Popcorn Shop, on the way home from Irving.  That's where we bought our penny candy. And the Phosphates at Snelgroves! Ymmm! I have thought about those many times over the years.  Since my 12 yr old boyfriend Craig Clark's mother worked at Snelgroves, we got ours free.  You must have lived right close to Craig, Chris.

Ross, I loved the link to the photos of old signs!  What a great blast from the past!  Man, how I love those old memories!

Thank God we couldn't see into the future when we were in high school. If I could have seen all the pain, the way life would have changed so drasticaly, and how family and friends would die or drift away from the old family beliefs. I wish I would have let heather drive that vw. over the cliff, In her L.S.D. trip believing she was an eagle. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee one short trip flying befor we crashed. Too stoned to feel pain then crash it's over.

I remember walking home from school one time down 21st heading to 8th east.  Not positive now if it was on the way home from Irving or Forest.  I think it was Forest.  As we were walking past the Snelgrove parking lot we were yelled at by a man in the office area on the west side.  I believe it was "Old man Snelgrove" and he made us come into the office.  We were told we could not cut across the parking lot to the alley and needed to stay away.  Going to call our parents, what a pain all of us school kids were always cutting across his property, etc etc. and how he had caught us before. (not true).    Then he gave us both a Snellie ice cream bar and sent us on our way.   Very strange but great ice cream.

Hey Chris,  had not thought of Keith O'brians or Picadilly in ages.  Miss the fish and chips.  I remember when they put that gate on the Dee's exit to Lake street.  Hated it when it was closed.

Candida,  I remember Craig Clark, have not hear that name in ages.  I never had Phosphates so I have no idea what I missed.  I do remember their interesting electric eye door.

Great outing and photos Paul.  Is there anything happening in the Nu Crisp store?  If I remember that last time I drove up 21st it seemed very deserted.     Kind of sad thinking how all the schools I attended are no longer schools.  At least Irving has the name on the section in your photo of the apartments, and South still kind of exists in a modified version.

Don't think of South High as being gone. Think of it as having graduated and gone on to bigger and better things. It is a college now, after all!

Did you check out the menu prices at Cucinanassi? (The smileys aren't working for me so picture the one with the raised eyebrows and open mouth here.) But it does seat up to 250.

Hey all you Sugar House Rats, What was the name of the bakery across the street from Forrest? Duncans???? maybe. I should remember I lived across the street???? Old age sucks sometimes.

Hey Rod,

Yep it was Dunfords.   I go to their outlet store in West Jordan for Donuts.  Great chocolate donuts.   But Fischer Cyclery is still in business, Paul even had a photo of it.

Paul,  I was trying to remember if Keith O'Briens was on the corner where Barnes and Noble or was it on the South West corner where the vacant field is now?  I know the movie theater was right next to where Barnes and Noble is.

Charlotte,  I guess you are correct, at least it has not totally changed or been destroyed.  I think it would be fun as Jerry and Gloria mentioned to go walk the halls again.

Paul,  I was just thinking you definately do not want to forget Quicks.

Oh man, I feel like I just slid into my old Delorean and powered up the Flux Capacitor !  WOW !  I remember all of these places with MUCH fondness ! (although, I'm still trying to replace the 'Depression' memories with these oldies).  Yes, Paul, makes you want to "wish upon a star" - way too many dreams vanished away during those hard days....... Well now, back to the more recent 'past'.  I am wondering if I am the only one who frequents 'Millies' - AKA 'The Greaser' there on 21st and 10th East. We have been going there, fairly often, for 34 years now !  When we first started going there in 1977, burgers were 3 for $1 (they are a bit more than that now, but they taste EXACTLY the same !). Anyone out there gone for the 3-for-$2.49-burger-special lately ? (be sure to ask for extra sauce).   PS - Our son worked for Dunfords, here in W.J. for awhile - he has memories of getting up as early as 3:30AM and delivering.    Doc McFly Delorean DeGraw

Yeah Paul,  I came by many times to see what cool new things you had.  I also remember my "mini bike"  kit.   Got the frame painted, put on the seat and tires then add my own Briggs and Stranton engine from an old lawn mower and blast around the yard.

Hey Paul! I've actually been to that Spudnuts shop in Richland, WA. I was visiting my daughter and her husband at Christmas. They live in the TriCities - Kennewick (where they live), Pasco and Richland. My son-in-law insisted we go get doughnuts one morning and low and behold, it turned out to be this Spudnuts shop . He didn't believe me that Spudnuts actually got their start in Salt Lake City. I'll have to send him a copy of the video. Thanks!

Wow, I think we're all on a roll - or should I say a Spud.  Ok, you r not going to believe this (or maybe u already know); A few months ago, we took the whole Fam Gang to Pizza Stop on Main Street Magna. We finish up and I ask if anyone wants something from the Kiwi Bakery next door (having had the real stuff in New Zealand and Australia) . After we went in and ordered a few delights, I said "about all we need now to complete this are a few Spudnuts" . My laughter was interupted by the owner responding with "We are now the authorized Spudnut Vendor in Town" ! Wow, couldn't believe it - woulda' bought some but they were all sold out !  Also, we bought a bag of 'em in Layton a year or so ago - don't know if they're still there or not, but they tasted EXACTLY as they did in years past (de ja Vous - sp[?]).  Flip Paul, you reminded me that just about the only car I regret selling is the John Delorean-Mobile - what the hey, can't take 'em with you anyway {wait a cotton-pickin' minute - Enoch did it, why can't we ?} !      Helped-Ireland's- Economy-Not-To-Mention-John's-Drug-Deals-DeO'DeGrawski

Ross,

Keith O' who?? I haven't lived in SLC since 1971 so I couldn't tell you. Fichers was my 1st job sweeping floors? There was a small service station on the north side of the railroad tracks across from the tennis courts ( I don't remember the streeet name ). I think Linda Waters , Ron Mathison and yourself lived down where I had my paper route, 8th east? Man I'm having flashbacks, they were supposed to have cured me after Vietnam??? Thanks for all the memories all of you!!!

Keith O'Brien was where I got my wedding china and glassware - still have it.

Here's a flashback - remember green stamps? Keith O'Briens was one of the few places that gave green stamps. My mom collected them religiously. And remember skating at Hygea? Much safer than trying to skate on the pond at Liberty Park.

Another fond memory - Saturday sale days at Auerbach's downtown. Mom always took me and my sister along to fight the hordes of women. She had checked out the ads the night before and she was going to rush to one spot, Nola to another and me to a third. The plan was to grab all the merchandise you could and then Mom would come around and sort out what she actually wanted. Man, there were some viscious women there and being a little girl they'd glare at you or try to talk you out of something like you had no right to have it.

Char - yes and yes !  Does anyone remember one of my favorite memories ? That would be the ten cent hot dogs at Kress' - I still remember what the 'hot dog' lady looked like ('tho I don't remember what I did yesterday. I have been enjoying two VHS videos titled 'In Those Days - The Wasatch Front of the 1930's' and  'Salt Lake City - Once Upon A Time'.  They are GREAT !! They show Sugar House and areas all over SLC.    I-Will-Gladly-Pay-You-Thursday-for-a-Kress'-Hot-Dog-For-Today (name your price).

Loved the ten-cent hot dogs and still laugh at the ten-cent coin-op bathrooms there as well!  The theater signs bring back lots of memories.  I worked at the Capital.  I think it is the only one left -although not a movie theatre now - the Centre, Rialto, Utah, and of course the Villa further south and the Arcade on what was then 8th west all bring back fun memories.  I also am reminded by the Bonwood sign of busing to Bonwood for P.E. and fun bowling!

Jerry,

The name of the old lady at Kress' in the light green dress with mustard on her apron was "Zola." When we were in Jr. High, McLelland and I would catch the 6:15 a.m. bus (10 Poplar Grove -10 cents) to the Deseret Gym almost every Saturday morning to be the first there when the doors opened at 7:00 and stay there 'till late afternoon - with hot dogs (4 each) at at Kress' before catching the bus home.  I remember her name, because John would always give her sh_t.   M e m o r i e s ! ! !

Jeff, WOW, I may remember what she looked like, but I would NEVER have known her name !  Once, my Sister took me there while I was in my 'Purple People Eater' costume and I sang the song to her (Zola) - She Laughed and clapped and I think she may have given me a free dog {remember how good that yellow mustard relish tasted on that home-made bun ??!!!}. Me bloody mouth is watering right now - BIG TIME ! Ahhhhhhh.

Linda, Hah, now that u mention about the pay potties, I'm reminded about a message, written on the stall wall. It read : "Here I sit, broken hearted; Paid a nickel, and only far___!  (sorry, can't do the actual Gaseous word - u all get the idea). Remember how Kress' would have an entrance on Main and then go downstairs and exit onto Broadway (3rd So.) - that was way cool !    Mean Mr. Mustard
