Hey Rod,  Yes Linda, Ron and I were neighbors and great friends.  I did not remember that you delivered papers in our area.   My first job was sweeping at Forest elementary.

Many memories of places that make you think of other places and people.  The only one that does not stir memories is Jerry mentioning Millies.  I have never heard of this place......not sure if it is real or in Jerry's mind.?????

Linda, you are right there were many really great theaters that are no longer theaters.

Speaking of Spudnuts that was another very early age job where I would pick up donuts from the shop on 7th east probably about 20th south and sell donuts door to door.  Had a huge basket with bags on donuts like the vendors a sports parks.

Jeff, pick up basketball at Deseret Gym was great.   Do you remember the "All Church" basketball tournament?

Paul,  I think you got me a deal on the mini bike kit.

Charlotte,  The sales at Aurbachs were very interesting especially from the view of an employee watching the people stream into the building.  I worked at Aurbachs for  a while and I remember the annual "baby" sale.   This was the big sale of baby furniture, clothing etc.  There was a direct entrance to this department from the parking garage.  It was quite a show seeing everyone storm in when the door was open and start grabbing everything.

Do you remember going to the S&H green stamp redempltion store to turn you books of stamps into treasures?

Paul and Ross,

You were both right and now that the cob webs are being shacken loose in this old melon things are starting surface. No real nightmares yet Thankfully.

Jeff,

I had lunch with John and he's still giving it to the servers. Seems both sides thrive on it, it's fun to watch.

Thanks for the memories

I sure do - one of the redemption centers was on 3rd west, by the old D.I. - can't remember if it was the S&H or the Gold Strike Center.   PS - my mind sure is able to produce some mighty tasty, cheap, simple burgers - wish it could do that at Home !     Whimpy

I got my first baseball mitt from S&H Green stamps!  I still have it.  My kids and grandkids get a pretty big kick out of it now, but it served me well for a lot of years of pitching and short stop.

I've eaten at Millie's Burgers, Jerry.  It's on 21st South and 10th East on the Northwest corner. It's been a few years, but I'm pretty sure it's still there. (One of the few things still there) They had a pretty big selection of burgers and sandwiches, and fried mushrooms-Yummmm!  I'll have to keep that in mind when I'm in Salt Lake again.

Well it's been making me nuts.....my family moved in our house the summer 1964 and there was a family down the street with a kid my age, and guess what I can't remember his name, or the family's last name, and I think they moved in the summer of 65 , but it could have been Clark he was a nice kid we used to shoot hoop in my drive way. but anyway I remember my dad would take a burned out bulb from the back of the TV and send me to( Grand Central )to buy a new one, or have it tested, Radio bulbs too. spent a lot of time at Grand Central....they sold 45's

Yes, Millies is on the menu at least once a month - never will give it up !

Charlotte Warr (Andersen)

Ah yes, Chris! I forgot all about Grand Central - I miss them. I still have Christmas decorations that have Grand Central price stickers on the boxes.

Speaking of hamburger joints I was in Brigham City today and I went to Maddox's Drive-In for lunch. I didn't even know they had a drive-in with car hops and all. I had a buffalo burger and it was delicious. Their fries were great, too.

 Ross,

Now I am having memories.  My mom used to go to that dounut place and buy cripples for our family.   We loved it!  I came from a big family and it was one of our favorite treats!

I saved green stamps after Mike and I married to redeem a blender.  Have had to replace the top glass part a couple of times until I had a light bulb moment and purchased plastic but the machine is still going strong! That was 38 years ago.  I got my stamps worth!

OK, Patty, I have to ask. What are cripples? My mom worked at Dunford's for a few years and I don't ever remember anything called that.

Hey Patti,

I also remember my Dad bringing home boxes of cripples from Salt Lake Donut on State street and about 26th south.   They were a great treat for a bargain price.

Hello All:

I am having some fun reading everyone's recollections about shops, stores, and the fun in the neighborhoods around South. My cousin and I spent a lot of time bowling on Main Street---was it Bonwood? I remember we saved Potato Chip coupons for free games. I grew up on West Temple and 17th South and my cousin's mom and dad owned Henry's Barber Shop and and Ann's Beauty Salon on the corner (the Vander Veurs). The A and W on 21st was Great! The Frost Top on Main and 1850 South also fun. McKinley School is no more and neither is the Old World Motel between State and Main. When we were kids at McKinley Elementary the old Family Bread Bakery was next door--that was a ton of fun with great "baking bread" memories.  Yes, I'm all over the place in writing--but here's a few: I remember hearing the sirens during summer nights of emergency vehicles going to the Old County Hospital on State and 21st. I remember the dogs in the neighborhood "enjoying" that as well. We played on the burial vaults ever since we were little at the Johnson Burial Vault Company not really understanding in our younger years what those things were-smile. Also, we use to pick up candy money by bottle hunting in Liberty Park (back in a day when our parents would drop us off for hours--can you imagine doing that now?) Wow you guys--interesting memories. Wishing you all well,

frederik

Linda, speaking of movie theatres, I dont know if any of you remember him, but Randy Werner (a junior when we were seniors - I heard he died a few years ago, sad . . . but I digress).  In any case, Randy was the night manager at the Rialto Theatre, and would let us in for free if we would sit in the balcony, which was otherwise officially "closed".

One night four of us (Mike Vranes, Koji, John Mathews - if my memory serves me right - and yours truly) showed up to see the new hit movie "Bullitt" starring Steve McQueen.  As was the procedure, we had the ticket girl call Randy to the front, he let us in and we headed straight up to the balcony. Not only were we too cheap to buy a movie ticket, but we were also too cheap to buy the expensive theater treats, so we brought our own fare.  That particular night we brought a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken (Mike Vranes idea I think) which we ehthusiastically passed back and forth as we enjoyed the movie.

Now Randy was a good manager, and very insistent we not make a mess up there, as the balcony was indeed officially "closed".  We had a delimma . . . what to do with the chicken bones?  . . . having no place to dispose of them as there was yet uneaten chicken in the bucket!! I think Koji had the idea - the snuggly couple on the third row . . . the old man with the hat in the corner . . . I guess in those days (considering our adolescent sense of humor) it was funny watching people turn around trying to figure out where those greasy remnants were coming from.  No one bothered looking up . . . after all, the balcony was officially "closed."

I don't know how many of you remember much about the movie "Bullitt" but it had one of the first and probably to this day one of the greatest car chase scenes in movie history - with Lieutenant Bullitt (Steve McQueen) in his Mustang chasing the "bad guys" in their black Dodge Charger (click on the link below if you are interested in a flashback).

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMc2RdFuOxI

Koji (AKA Steve McQueen) was the designated driver that evening . . . in his Mustang . . .  Need I say more??  It was a miracle any of us survived the ride home that night!!!

OK  I read back a few days of posts and could not believe that Kress' hotdogs got so much attention.  I think of them every now and then because that relish made them the best.  Just cut through the store and get a dog.  When I got married I sewed my own weding dress.  It turned out amazing.  I purchased the buttons from kress cuz I could not find what I wanted in a regular fabric store.

Talk about getting dropped off for hours at the park.  Linda Larsen, Kathy Bozen, and I basically grew up in Jordon park!  In the summer we spent hours in the pool.  We lived very close to it and could walk there.  We cut thruogh the park to the theater, the Arcade, on 8th west for a 10 cent Saturday matinee movie or to walk to the Chapman branch of the library.  I have been away from Salt Lake for so  Looooooong that I can not remember most of the places you guys are talking about. Out of sight out of mind I guess.  But it is fun when something does open the cob web recesses of this ol' brain.

PS do you think eating circle challenged food could warp a little kid?

Patty, I don't know about the others, but it sent me, Like the The U.S. Enterprise, into Warp Drive, yeah, even Hyper-Warp - Haven't been the same since ( as you can all testify from my ultra-warpy Messages !).       James T. DeGrawkirk

more memories!!!!!  50 cent hogie's at Woolworths, Spud-nuts, Cory Anderson pies, gas 25 cents per gallon, gold strike stamps, great T.V. shows sponsered by cigarette companies. Dee burgers 10 for a dollar, did you ever manage to eat one without getting hic-ups?  Penny loafers. Thong grooves that weren't butt floss, sluffing school to play at the aviary for free, the gas guy knocking on the door then walking in to read the meter, for that matter unlocked doors. Saratoga. Safeway grocery stores, Skaggs drug store. Remember when they put the chain link fence down the middle of state street to try to keep us from Jay-walking and dragging state. lol didn't take you guys long to get rid of that fence. getting kicked out of libraries for talking, paper dresses, grade school teachers making us hold our hands up so they could check if we had washed them. Did anyone go through childhood without having a pet turtle? remember those cute lil green turtles, we'd get ftom the plastic swimming pool at Grand Central. Blue light specials at kmart. Twirl town toys, hoppy taws, cigarette loads, Cap guns, Beamans, Clove, and black Jack gum. Did I, miss anything

Someone asked what crippled doughnuts were, any broken or mishapped doughnuts don't sell so they put them on a seperate tray to sell at a discounted price. You can probably still get them at Salt Lake doughnut, but you have to get there really early cuz they sell fast.

I had to ask my husband about the seat belt. He said that someone made Souvall a seat belt to lock him to his seat at basketball games so he wouldn't get so many technical fouls.

George Souvall is still around, resisting his need for knee surgery. My husband has lunch with him a couple of times a years.

Hey, notice what's right across the street from Subway ? Forget the seat belt - I remember his hard, plastic baseball bat that frequently put welts on the back of our legs and behinders ! Ouch !! ( am I thinking of the right Coach ? I'm old). Remember who's Dad invented the Hoppy-Taw ? (He was at the reunion).    Millies Muncher

PS - Just measured the snow outside - 9" on garbage can lids, 7.2" on hoods of 3 cars and 8" on middle of front lawn.....Fun !!

Charlotte Warr (Andersen)

Would that be Moroni Schwab who invented the hoppy taw? I can't find anything about it with a web search.

Speaking of food, did everyone else grow up thinking scones were pieces of dough dropped into deep fat and fried until they were big puff balls? Yummy! I was so confused (and disappointed) when I went to Australia and they served me scones that were triangles with a taste and texture like sweet biscuits. Scones are different in Utah than elsewhere.

Hoppy Taw inventor - Mike Vranes' dad.

He was also famous for going out his porch at midnight on NY Eve with his 12 gague shotgun and firing off several rounds into the air.

Oui Oui, Si Si Heffe - He and I had something in common, and it wasn't inventing uncallenged round things. Still is true to this day ( Firearm of choice may change at shooter's discretion ).    Bullet bill

PS -  Char, both Jeff and I, among others in our group, besides yourself, know full well the difference between the real scones and the imposters as you mentioned. " Once a jolley Swagman, camped by a billabong......"

PS2 - Smith's, by our Home, also has the imposters - actually, not too bad.

I hate following the Dork just above me, but , speaking of Roy Rogers, d'yall remember that prior to it being the Fish and Chip shop, Pic's was a roast beef sandwich shop named after the above named R.R. ?   Paul, did u ever get your bag of Spudnuts ?  I conversed with them, and they said they are selling them every day now ( they were only open on certain days until just recently).    Bud Spud
