Ken, I don't think the issue is or has been about the people of China. My daughter has lived in China for nearly 5 years and she loves the people and she has been hignly respected and is now teaching in a university in China. The issue, like our situation here, is the government. The people have been brainwashed into thinking the the government is there for the people but, as we have learned, the government becomes so big that it becomes a government with people instead of a government for the people. Hong Kong is a perfect example. If you want a true understanding of the situation start a pen pal or internet chat with a Hong Kong citizen.
Personally I'm glad this conversation is happening and am hopeful that the impulse to attack and degregate is replaced with an interest to listen to others and pick and choose what is comfortable and leave the rest. This whole dialogue has been framed by unnecessary judgement and chastisement and lack of respect. The word respect has been used here, but only one way. I'm sure each of us, and there are more than you think, can get excited and even enlightened by contributions from all different areas besides what is common to everyone, a birthday.
Our friendships at South were not based on birthdays but in our similarities and differences. We aren't demanding someone "allow" the Right, it is already there so try to share, you may find even more reasons for our friendships than what we found as young people.
Or maybe not!
I'm very serious about learning more about what being in the center of the movers and shakers in Washington DC was like. Even if it has to happen under another venue, Jerald, please send me an email, I have a hundred questions and would love to update a blog I post to. rbsslc@yahoo.com
