Very cool Chuck. Were you drafted and if so what was your lottery #?

Chuck,

What a terriffic momento!  Veteran's Day has always been very special to me.  Dad served in the Army in the Korean Conflict & my husband Randy served proudly in the Marines in Viet Nam.  I buried him 4 years ago on Veteran's Day......  To all the South High Cubs that have served (as well as all other veterans)---

"THANK-YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY"

I was having a terrible time in life in 1971 dying of starvation, flunking out of college and pulling a lottery number of 16.  Larry Stettler of our class pulled #23 so we both decided to enlist for the draft on the Buddy Plan.  Remember that?

It was great because a week after we started Boot Camp VOLAR was approved by Congress so we gat a fat pay raise.  Three months later I got my draft notice when we were at Fort Polk in Infantry training. There I became one of the finest fighting men in the world and was well prepared to prove it.

I never saw combat but was on high alert several times through my service.  Mostly activity by Black September and Badder Menihoff activists in Germany blowing up our installations.

Thank you all for your favorable comments as I'm honored that I wore the uniform and was ready to fight and die for the country.

Hats off to all Vets.

To Chuck and all my classmates who served in the military, thank you for your service!  I didn’t serve and I often  times regret it.  My Dad, my wife, my son and my daughter in law all served so I am definitely in the minority in the family.  For those of you that are interested, my son Ben Hayhurst is being featured in the National Geographic’s mini series “The long road home” that just started showing on the National Geographic’s channel. You can also buy it on Amazon.  He saw some of the most intense fighting in Iraq.

Happy Veterans Day to all Cubs and your family and friends who had the honor of serving this great country!!!  I spent most of my adult life in uniform and watched many young men and women sacrifice their time and lives to insure our freedoms.  Thank you and God bless you all on this day... Thinking of all you vets on this day of honor.

I have been searching and searching for a really poor photo of my husband, Eskild, in the bush in Vietnam. It's the only one he has that documents his military experience. For some reason, he never had one taken of him in uniform. We did have his uniform around for a while but it just seemed to be taking up space. I wish we had kept it now. He kept the decorations and the silver rifle though. It looked something like this:

I wanted to share an activity my Son Nate inherited several years ago.  Frank Cordova, a local activist, formed a turkey drive for poor children 18 years ago.  Prior to his death five years ago he asked Nate to take it over and make in permanent.  We have since created a 501(c)3 around the drive, increased donations by almost 100% and this year provided well more than 1600 turkey to students at seven of the poorest elementary schools in the County as well as a half dozen or more local charities.  The semi was donated by Pride Transport, the Police escort was donated by the city and the volunteers come from many different sectors.

Happy Holidays to all.

Chuck

Thanks for posting all the great holiday music.  Love the Beachboys and Mary Chapin Carpenter.  I can't sing a lick for sure but I get comfort from Tom Petty becuase he soften seems to be out of tune.  Keep those great songs coming.
