Brent Barnum

Jerry-I must comment about your uncle, Verlyn Thomas. If we are talking about the same Verlyn, he was a wonderful man! The Verlyn Thomas I knew was our Bishop in the Jefferson Ward of the Temple View Stake back in the early 60's. He was a young and energetic leader who influenced me for good as he set a great example of Christ-like love.

At the time, we lived in a house across the street from South High (1554 S State, to be exact). My parents had been divorced for about 4 years and my hard working mother was struggling to raise 5 children by herself. Bishop Thomas was a God-send, both spritually and temporally. There are certain people that are put in your life that act as Sentinels and inspiration. Verlyn Thomas was one of those special people in my life.

And Ray and Deann, thanks for pointing out the passing of Mrs Orme. We were close in that I was on the Scribe staff all three years at South. Mrs Orme and I locked horns more than once over editorial content. In the spring of each year, the "Junior Edition" of the Scribe was put out and the seniors would take a siesta while the underclassmen would do all the work. I had just been selected to be the editor of the Scribe for our upcoming senior year and as such, tradition dictated that I serve as the junior editor (spring of '69). I proceeded to put together my vision of what a high school newspaper should be: a discussion of current events including editorial content about Vietnam, civil rights and the music of the 60's. Sweet Mrs Orme would have none of it and the struggle over the fate of that Junior Edition fell to Dr Williams who ultimately sided with Mrs Orme. In so doing, I resigned as future Scribe editor. Arva Dover was named editor. As I recall, Mrs Orme threw me a bone by including me in the yearbook as a member of the Scribe staff our senior year. And now you know the rest of the story...

Brent - too bad Ms. Southam wasn't the Scribe advisor. I'm sure she was a lot more progressive.

I think I may have posted the first video a while back. The second one I'm posting because there's a Big Wheel motorcyle amongst the many shown.

Hmm...I'll take the 'Big Wheels', tho' I love 'em all :-)  ( what do You think, Paul, Ross and Craig ? )

Brent, yes, He's one and the same :-) I'm happy to hear that He was so dear to You and Your Fam ! We eat at Golden Corral, once a month, with His Wife, Who just turned 90 a few days ago. We just had an open-house, to celebrate that, at the Jefferson Ward - it was great seeing everyone, and watching videos from when They were VERY young :-) He worked with Pres. Monson, at Newspaper Agency Corp, and became good friends. Sometimes P.M. would show up at Farewells and other Family get-togethers. Apparently He and My Father would get together at Church dances, softball games, etc

Brent, thanks for sharing your memory.  I had no idea about all of the hoops needing to be jumped through.

Thank goodness for wonderful teachers, leaders and friends we had to help us.  I surely wish I had taken advantage of their wisdom.

I have seen and heard a lot of talk about how school didn't and doesn't teach you about things you really need to know. It's true - especially about home economics. The classes didn't really teach us about economics - how to budget, balance a checkbook, interest, mortgages, etc. Looking back I definitely could have used more instruction about those things.

But I did enjoy home economics classes especially sewing classes. Except Mrs. Moody's class. Does anyone else remember her from Irving Junior High? She really fit her name. She was very dogmatic - do it her way or get a bad grade. I already knew more about sewing than she ever taught in my classes with her and the way she did things were tedious and unnecessary.

On the other hand, at South Helen Hancey taught me so much and she was probably one of my favorite teachers. She gave us so much more freedom on what we could do in class. I think I even sewed a prom dress in her class. And basic pattern drafting - that has come in handy for me.

It used to be cheaper to sew your own clothes rather than buy them. The opposite is true now. People sew their own clothes because they enjoy sewing and want to be creative. And it will cost just as much as something moderately priced - if you count time spent it would compare with something high-end.

For some reason I remember this one dress pattern in high school that several of us (or our moms) made for ourselves. I know I made this one - it was appropriately South High blue. Does anybody else reading remember it or remember wearing one?

Char, I remember that pattern but never made that particular dress.  I learned most of my sewing and cooking skills from my Mom, and took most home economics classes in Jr. High.  Mom used to have fits when I used the methods taught in school.  I always made my skirts and most dresses.  It's a very handy skill to have but must say I don't like the fabrics now.

Things such as balancing check books, etc. I learned in the business classes and mostly in Jr. High at Lincoln.  At South I remember Mrs. Wheeler (formerly McDermaid) made sure we learned a variety of sports that we would use in life.  Things such as golf and though I thought it was crazy at the time, archery.  It is interesting how many times I have used those archery basics.  Mrs. W understood we were better off knowing things we would use in life rather than focusing on the President's fitness items which I never used after I passed the P.E. tests.

I must have been too busy taking art classes (and seminary) to do many business classes. My mom taught me an awful lot about sewing and probably the basics of balancing a checkbook. Nowadays I just keep track of the money online - I've never been much for doing math except when I'm figuring out proportions on a quilt.

Speaking of balancing, I remember back in Junior High the gym teacher (I wish I could remmber her name) came up with this list of 50 different odd skills and we would get our grade on how many of them we could actually accomplish. Some of them seemed downright dangerous - we weren't trained in gymnastics after all. One of the harder ones I mastered was the frog hand stand. Not really a skill one can put to use much in life but I could probably still do it into my 40's. Now if I tried it I know I would hurt myself.

Interesting quote:

“A liberal’s paradise would be a place

where everybody has guaranteed employment,

free comprehensive healthcare, free education,

free food, free housing, free clothing, free utilities,

and only law enforcement has guns.”

And believe it or not, such a place

does indeed already exist:

It's called Prison."

Can someone explain to me that once you purchase something on a credit card, it shows up almost immediately but when it is returned, it may take 5-10 days using the same technology.

I'm still hoping to keep this forum friendly and free of politics.

Free of politics Char?  What does that mean?

I wasn't political in high school because I was too busy trying to stay out of trouble while trying to find the next good party or the next cute girl to squeeze.

When I got to college I realized why.

I guess you're right Char.  It's an electon year and charged with so much BS.  And, we are in Utah (right as you can get) and some of us? Well you know.

The only way I was able to cope with it in the news business was to never take it serious. We used to call the Legislature the Cartoons.  We referred to the Deocrats and Republicans as the Cadillac and the Continental while the smaller parties were the chevs and fords or even the studibakers.

I better stop now because I could go on all day being cynical. But, it is something we in America take seriously because our whole way of life is based on revolution.  I imagine the British thought the founding fathers were a buch of thugs but the rest is history and we are a products of those thugs.

I want Jerry DeGraw for President!!!!!

Ok, maybe I'm touchy. Those of you who read regularly have probably figured out that I lean toward atheism. Someone has touched on that a couple of times and I get defensive. You probably have also realized that I'm a liberal. And I know that on both of those points my opinion is vastly outnumbered by the rest of you.

My natural instinct is to offer my side of the debate. I really had to restrain myself from commenting on Sherrif Arpaio yesterday. When we get into these kind of debates they tend to descend into ugliness. It's happened before and even though I tried keeping the disagreement civil I ended up being called a butt wipe.

I'd still like to keep this a friendly forum and keep religion and politics out of it. But if the rest of you want to go into those discussions I won't stop you. But I'll warn you. I have too much time on my hands right now and if you want to go that direction things could get unpleasant. I want to stay friends with you.

SHAZAM....Go-o-o-lee...tho' I have been living in the back-room of the Fillin' Station, I DO have the great pleasure, still, of reading these posts, since Mayberry just came on-line laugh. Where do I begin...( reminds me of a song..)......Hmm....Char, yes, I remember that pattern, from admiring it on a few of Our Southern Sweethearts, but was WAY too shy to do anything about it ! :-( Gary, Oui, You seem to have a keen memory of My yellow Malibu SS, which DID, indeed, have it's custom-made, Swenson-DeGraw ( You Bird ) 8-speed transmission ( take a deep breath )...STOLEN, right from under Our beaks ! Gerd...YES !  Dale, I DO appreciate Your Loyal, tho' misguided, vote of confidence on My bid for President, but have been bought-and-paid-for by 'The Donald', so He could proceed, no, sail-thru', un-impeded !!! ( I wouldn't have done it, but I've had My eye on another Malibu, with a matching, yellow scooter ). Besides, I would have freely conceded My Presidency to Judge Judy, had I been able to convince Her to leave 'The Bench' !!!! ( seriously, I would LOVE her to be Our Commander-in-Chief....can You imagine how many people She could say " You're lying to Me" to ? ) Ha, that would be GREAT !!!

Yes, We all are Dorks, but We can, and will, remain Friends, even with Our Own opinions and convictions wink

I thought liberals were supposed to be funnier and enjoy jokes.  Comedy Central, John Stewart, etc.  Or is it just a fallacy?  Um?

Hello to all of my dear South High friends ... I apologize as I have been MIA for awhile, still here, but oh so busy with life.  I just wanted to say hello on this beautiful spring day and say Happy Friday.  I hope all is well for everyone and I certainly would welcome hearing from any and all...

I am so sorry I missed the reunion and would love to get together with those willing and available.  Anyone have an idea or two on how to make that happen.  Looking forward to seeing some of you!

Sincerely,

Cathy Hampshire (aka Catherine)

OK, Gerd, maybe I'm being an up-tight jerk. I do love all the liberal/funny shows. I'm missing Jon Stewart badly, but I still have John Oliver and Bill Maher to enjoy. If everyone wants to go into their religious/politcal views let's go for it as long as it will stay friendly. But I see it devolving into personal attacks and meanness.

But then I should think of my siblings. My brother, his girlfiend, my husband and myself are liberals. My other 3 siblings ans their spouses are quite conservative. We get political at our family gatherings and it can get quite funny. But we seem to know the limit - the point where someone is going to get offended. For example, my sister loves Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly - she's the most extreme right-wing person of the family. At our last gathering she said she kind of likes Trump I jokingly told her that if she voted for Trump I was going to disown her. At a previous gathering though, my brother and I went a little too far with her and she got huffy and left the room. One thing we really never discuss at our gatherings is religion, though. My brother came back from his mission to England and became an atheist right after. My oldest brother served his mission when he was 19 and has done 3 more missions with his wife since he retired. He loves to go the Central American looking for Book of Mormon evidence (and he hasn't found much). But lines in the family are drawn pretty much like they are politically. But I think we all refrain from religious discussions because they could get acrimonious.

So, can we figure out a limit?

Chuck, I like funny.

For those who would like to get together on an informal basis.  Here's a thought.

For example, i can rent a pavillion in Sandy City for $25.  I could rent one, post a message as to time and place, and those who want to show up, show up with their own 'picnics' and we talk.  If no one shows up, I would be out $25 and my wife and I would be sitting there like a bunch of fools.  which we do at times anyway.

That way we don't need to wait 5 years and little, if any, planning is needed.  And if only a few of us show up, we can talk religion and politics and make it an interesting afternoon.

Thoughts?
