That's really cool about Eric Clapton, Paul, and that he's a Cubs fan, although I suspect that means Chicago and not South High.  He really shops at Costco?  I also have a Red Sox hat and saw them a year ago when my daughter ran  the Boston Marathon.  Gotta love David Ortiz, former Salt Lake player, 500 homers or so ago.  He aslo hit a home run around Pesky Pole while we were sitting in the right field grandstand.

I just announced my retirement yesterday when I realized I was losing $ by working.  I am paying $540 a month for FICA while gaining only $13 in Social Security and $2 in state pension per month so I should have retired a couple of years ago.

Ever wonder why all those pop songs sound kinda the same? Well, it's pretty simple; They all use the same 4 Chords! (Sorry about the one bad swear word.)

Hey Bart,

That is a really interesting thought that really appeals to me.   I do have a question.  What are you medical insurance plans / options.

I just found out that Gloria Simpson Royal passed away last Wednesday Nov 18.  I didn't know that my cousin had been married to her brother until my cousin's daughter posted the obituary on Facebook.  There is no service, at her request,  but an obituary can be found at www.premierfuneral.com/m/obituaries/Gloria-Royal-2/     I did not know her that well when we were at South but I hope she is at peace now.  I appreciate all of you who keep us updated and entertained, and especially those who put together the reunion.  It was so great to see everyone.   It helped me remember how blessed I was to have such great friends when I was in school who are still great examples to me even if I haven't seen them for 45 years.   May you all have a great Thanksgiving this week and remember all that we have to be grateful for during this holiday season.    I hope to see even more of you at the 50th!

Barbara,

Thank you for posting the information on Gloria's passing.  I didn't have interaction in high school but, I so enjoyed her postings over the years on this web site.  I was just wondering last week why Gloria hadn't posted lately.  She was a breath of fresh air and humor. It's comforting that she is out of the physical pain she was suffering.

So sad to hear of losing another Cub friend! Thanks Barbara for the info, and like Suzanne, I so enjoyed her crazy posts. She never held back how she felt and I loved that about her!

She was a kick and so full of vim and vigor. I knew Gloria since elementary and she was always one of a kind. It seemed to me that this site gave her a connection and a plat form. She told us how she felt and yet it was still cathardic. This site will miss her and i will miss getting rebuffed by her ever so gentle way. MIss you already Gloria! Pres

She perturbed me so but I miss our banter. Rest in Peace, Gloria.

Another reminder of the destination on the road we're all traveling.  Like the preceding comments, I'll miss Gloria's opinionated commentary and "pull no punches" style.

I appreciated the work Gloria put in to organize the Fairmont Park picnic for our 40th reunion.  There are several photos of Gloria at that event on the Reunion Video 2010 (link on sidebar to the left), the last time I saw her.

Life's short and we shouldn't take even one day for granted.  I treasure my relationship with all you Class of '70 "Cubbies" and our look forward to our ongoing assoiations.

Wow, isn't that the way in life.  Another new friend from high school gone already.  This is sad.  I knew her from a distance in high school and believe it or not I was a little intimidated by her.  Imagine that?????

I too will miss her "shoot from the hip" approach.

Off to a better place.

Good bye Gloria. You were off the wall and very straight forward. Said it like you saw it. Made a few up set and definitely entertained the rest of us. Missed seeing you at the reunion. Now you will just be missed.

Ross,

I'm sorry I haven't gotten a chance to respond to your question until now.  I am lucky to have enough sick leave built up over the years that I get paid medical insurance for several years--well past when we qualify for Medicare.  That is one of the main reasons that I can retire a little earlier.  I would hate to pay for medical insurance on the open market.

Oh, by the way, Congress is taking away a couple of the nice options for Social Security that I wrote about a while back: the file and suspend option and the taking half of your spouse's until reaching age 70 when you can qualify for a higher anount.  If you are already taking advantage of these options, you are grandfathered and if you start it within six months, you can still get in on them.
