Preston Miller

I have fond memories of the following: Summer campaign parties and meeting new sophomores, running around Liberty Park in preparation to try out for the football team, coach Sylvester making me run a lap for swearing (but not others for swearing), coach Burt calling my name as a "Starter" on the sophomore kick off squad, coach Kirk awarding me the "Defensive Hitter of the Year" trophy my junior year which I count to this day as a valuable representation of who I could become. My times with the A Cappella on many Sundays singing Christmas songs which words still ring in my memory, Bel Canto traveling to luncheons and business meetings, dancing in the school plays and having crushes on many of the girls there, the dance concert as a senior where the jocs were asked by coach Kirk to participate and then finding an expressive side of me by lifting one handed my partner over my head and in another dance dying on the breast of another dance partner. How can I not grin when I think of the pep club, Southern Belles, decorating my locker and my home before each athletic event and my darling Debbie Jackson (my girl friend from kindergarten) being that person year after year...what confidence that offers a young man to be surprised with so much kindness and accolades in writing meant just for me. Eating a fish burger at Mc Donalds or each day buying a Salted Nut Roll and even sitting in that certain place in the cafeteria with friends all make terrific memories. The experiences from school dances and assembles where your group would be sure to be together, were the beginning of now lifetime friendships. These were formable years for a young man learning to face the future. It was at South that I learned to expand my view of this world by making new friends. Thanks to all who are part of my life experiences. I look forward to growing even older with you. "SUCK UP YOUR GUT" as we chanted before each football game.
