Richard C. Green

The car I would like to find the owner of was a 1955 Chevy, red in color. It was jacked up and in our sophomore year I seem to remember that it was owned by a senior. You could hear it coming from a few blocks away so I'm sure it had headers at least and probably a lot more. It was probably exactly like the car in that Beach Boys song: Little Deuce Coupe. The Beach Boys described that car as being ported and relieved, stroked and bored, could do a 140, etc. This guy would drive that car in past the Seminary building every morning as I stood in the stairway at the north end of the school with Steve Salen, throwing paper airplanes out onto the teachers cars and parking lot. I would watch this red 1955 Chevy go by and I remember thinking I got to get me one of these. I've looked through the yearbook but can't find the guy that owned it. Does anybody know who it was? My aunt was the woman who owned every car I ever wanted to own starting with a 1955 Chevy, and a 1957 Chevy, then a 1960 Chevy, and finally a 1966 Chevelle Malibu which I owned for about 10 years. That was a sweet car. She almost bought an SS 396 but decided against it.

Rides? Jim Curtis has me looking at 1" under illegal stretch limos, those huge ones made from Hummers. So if you need a ride home, I may be the one to call. One day in the crime lab they called me to the scene of a car prowl. It turned out to be a stretch limo that was broken into. That thing was 1 inch under illegal. I had to sit in it and process everything inside. Broke my heart. That was such a tough job.But Charlotte, I'll have to ask one of the cute jocks to drive it since I'm just an ugly old fart now.

I love the Patsy Cline stuff Char.  As an old Cowboy from Wyoming I loved seeing the lady pull all sorts of stuff out of her top and wondered what was left in there????

The Fonz you guys are talking about was John Crawford.  He transferred to South from East in Sophomore year and loved nothing more than burning through gears on his "honda."  His hair was thick so he wore the pompadour(sp) and did look and act a lot like the fonz.

John dropped out of school in Junior year to join the Marines, he left us last year.

His buddy on the other bike would've been Doug Chapman.  Largish kind of guy with blond hair and a personality that attracted women like flies.  (yes, just a bit of envy here).

I like the stuff about the IRS scam. I was able to get one of my compliance officers on the phone when they called my office. The fear of God hit when the realized someone else was on the phone and that I was a financial advisor. We were able to track the number back to Maylaysia, the same place that hacked my old e-mail address and told all my contacts I was stranded there to please send $5,000 to an address in Singapore.  About 20 of my contacts responded asking if the $5,000 they sent had arrived.  All of my contacts did call to tell me what they had done.

Now, Richard, did I say anything about jocks? I could, but won't, give you a whole list of guys that I had crushes on who weren't popular and weren't jocks. Basically, I would go out with anyone who would ask me out unless they were really creepy.

My first blind date was in junior high with some guy who I don't remember his name or even what he looked liked. All I remember is being in the back seat of a car with 2 or 3 other couples and him trying to stick his tongue down my throat while I was keeping my jaws locked. How's that for a first kiss?

Here's another one that I still feel guilty about. I was so desperate to go out that when a guy with one leg asked me out I went. I wish I remembered his name but I looked through the yearbook and only one face looked like it might be him so I won't say it. Anyway, we went out to a movie with another couple. He held my hand as we walked through the lobby and I felt so embarassed to be out with a guy with one leg but I knew my mother would be disappointed in me if she knew I felt that way. He must of liked me even though I was probably acting standoffish because later he made he a carved leather coin purse with my name on it and left it on my doorstep. But he spelled my name totally wrong on it so I felt it was OK to give him the cold shoulder if he couldn't even bother to spell my name right. I really wish I had been more mature and less shallow. He probably was a really nice guy.

Then, do you all remember the computer date dance that the seminary put on? It involved South, East and Highland High and was held on a Saturday evening at the Cottonwood Mall. I got hooked up with this very cute and popular guy from East named Dave Jorgensen. We double dated with one of his buddies and after Dave picked me up we went to get his buddy's date - she was fron Highland and let's just say she wasn't very attractive. When we got to the mall all the guys from East were "parading" their dates. They had a photo booth set up in a cubby hole somewhere along the mall. All the not very attractive girls were being escorted in to the booth with their dates to have their picture taken. I could tell right away that they were having a contest to see who got hooked up with the ugliest girl. Shallow me was very happy and relieved not to have the privelege of getting my photo taken. After the photo session our dates pretty much abandoned us until it was time to go home. Those assholes from East got into really big trouble for this stunt. Anybody else remember this?

Hey Jerry,   I remember the day we went out to your 57 Chev and I tried the key to my 59 chev and my key opened your trunk.   Then we were able to start your car with my key.  But your key did not work in my car.  Then if I remember correctly later your car was stolen and I get interviewed by the police because I had a key that fit.  What was great about cruising in the Corvette was evertime we got low on gas it was like I have 50 cents and you had 50 cents so we could buy 4 gallons of gas and keep going.

Ha, yes Ross, I DO remember that Your key fit My car - what a HOOT, and yes, it did get stolen, but was found later, abandoned somewhere or other :-) Oh, how did I forget to mention Quick's BLUE '55 Chev with the Triple Quads ( four barrel carbs ) , or maybe they were only duals, but WHAT a fuel intake system it had, at any rate. I felt bad when his great, HIGH Performance engine blew - I think all of us in auto-mechanics were ready to cry, even Mr. Swensen ( You bird ) :-)  Do any of You remember when Craig S pulled up to auto shop in his new silver Camaro SS ? A lot of envy was going on that day ! I sure can't remember the red '55 tho - didn't think ANY cars got past My notice ( I am old, however, and EVERYTHING gets past My memory, these days ). Paul, We can't let Winter overtake Us b4 We "take a ride"....wait, We already did , on Our HOA ride, but I need More. :-)  Back to You Ross...I sure wish You would have been home the night I rode the Goldwing, crawling with NEON lights, Thru Your Neighborhood - I was sure Your neighbors were going to call the Fuzz, upon seeing this alien-looking rig, especially when I started blocking Your driveway with Your garbage cans :-)

Tuesday is the day.  Prmary ballots should be counted and the winners to the run-off will be announced.  After 15 years of working electtion night in the newsroom I've never had this level of anticipation as I have now.

Perhaps the most excited I ever got was when Pete Suazo took his first shot at the legislature in the early 90s.

This time the name on the ballott is Salazar.

Please send positive energy to the young Salazar in the race for Salt Lake City Council District 4.

I know we unofficially banned politics from the site but nobody here has anybody running against him and he does have a direct tie to South High School.  Just ask me!

Thank you for the indulgence.

Here's another one for you, Richard. A little more lively, it's Dan Landrum playing the hammered dulcimer. I had the privelege of seeing him in person at the John Campbell Folk School. Boy is he good.

Char, I do remember that computer date dance.  Although it was originally slated for South, Highland, and East, because there were too many girls for the boys who had consented to go, they recruited some gentlemen from Olympus as well.  I doubled with two young men from Olympus and a cute girl from Highland.  They had a hard time finding my house (an odd piece of 13th So. on the west side) but I do remember it being a fun time.  As it turned out, a few years later, the one young man attended our wedding.  I didn't know until then, he was my husbands cousin!  Fun reunion  --  small world.

Great music as well, but when it comes to the water feature, I just want to sit and listen to the mellow sound of the water and the falls with the trees rustling around it.  It's the next best thing to camping on the skyline near my home town!

On another note, I loved the dolphins!   Swimming with dolphins is on my bucket list but I don't know if I'll make that one.  My Navy son trained dolphins as UED (Underwater Explosive Devises) search and rescue.  (I probably have the name wrong.)  And we were able to get up close and personal with them, but from the boardwalk.  It was great fun.  They are amazing creatures. If any of you have had fun swimming with dolphins, I'd love to hear about it.

Do you have a feature like this in your pond, Richard?

08/09/15 09:34 PM #2376

Candida Bettinson (Jensen)

It seems to me, Rick, if I remember in you pond pics you do have something like that.  I was quite interested in it but too involved to inquire about it for our pond.  I loved the Hilary Stagg music, and my husband hearing it from the other room was right on it to find out what it was.  We don't run our waterfall full time anymore, so it might be fun to have the music when I don't have the water sound to calm me.

The Dan Landrum I like for another time- like when I need a pick-me-up to keep me up to speed with a wild 2 yr old.  Fun stuff for sure.

I did some riding in a 57 Chev to and from school sometimes.  It belonged to Rich Daniels.  He always drove like a gentlemen when I was in the car.

Great memories of the seminary computer date, which I hadn't remembered until it was mentioned!

This was a trivial but interesting item from this morning's news. It's a pic of Duane Johnson aka The Rock from his high school yearbook when he was sixteen years old. He looks at least twice as old, doesn't he? Here's the article:

Tease away, Richard. Actually I don't remember Schwab pushing his brake on me though he probably did once or twice. You had to be on your toes with Schwab because if you did something stupid he would come up with one of his raunchy comments - talked about that before.

You have so many memories and I'm having trouble coming up with any.

I remember I truly hated Paul LaLonde, the art teacher. He was so lame which made it painful when art was the subject I loved the best. One day I was working on a project and he was trolling the room, looking at what everybody was doing. I was enjoying whatever I was designing. He came to my desk and studied my project for a moment and then he suggested that I change it drastically. I ask him why and he said, "Because I would like it that way." Nothing about the composition being weak or balance being off or no focal point or lacking in impact or any of the things an art teacher should say. I ignored him and went on with what I was doing. But his instruction and challenges were just so useless. I actually learned so much more about art from Mr. Densley at Irving Junior. (I liked him so much I went to his funeral when he died.) Anyway, I blame LaLonde for me having a really poor showing in the Art Sterling Scholar competition - I didn't have a chance of winning it. And he didn't prepare me for the U of U art program. That was actual culture shock when I got there and I dropped out after 2 quarters.

But when my daughter showed real promise in art I made sure that she could do well. Her high school art teacher was also rather lame and kind of a jerk. But I bought her the supplies she needed, I enrolled her in classes at the Peterson Art School, I paid for having her work framed. My parents couldn't afford to do all that for me and truthfully I shouldn't have been spending that much money. But it did pay off and she won the Art Sterling Scholar competition and got a full ride scholarship to Westminster. She is now a struggling artist in Seattle with her own small gallery - she has to work another job though to pay the bills. If you would like to check out her art here is her website: http://www.akarchy.com/

OK, enough whining for now.

You wanna bet Char.  We idiots spot eachother in a heartbeat.

And dear Pres.  Your e-mail calling all Chubbies led me to believe you were inviting we counter-culture folks as Chubby's cafe at 300 E 2100 S was our home after South and our real home.  I guess it was the kind of place you would likely not have gone to?

Oh well?

Charlotte Warr (Andersen)

You have to blame me for the latest email blast. Pres asked me to put together something and I was trolling for images (having something else in mind) and found this picture with Eric Campbell in it. Betcha never knew the actual name of Charlie Chaplin's nemesis in many of his films, huh? And I've never been to Chubby's. I guess I'll have to check it out. Is it still there?

What's the most recent count for the primary election, Chuck?

I used to hang out at Chubbies along with Bob Koer Chris Peel Bobby Monsen Spanky Sommerville Phyllis and Kathy Bueno Doug Smith all the hoods in the neighbor hood .Chubbies isn't there anymore its a mattress store also used to go to Wards market to get smokes .I still live in the area and remember the places to hang out

Richard you sound normal for our age and Richard I don't remember you at Chubby's.

I guess that means I was friends with all the hoods in the neighborhood.  Wow, imagine that, although I would not call them hoods.  I grew up in Central City and for a time did function as a "Hood."  By the time I got to South I had retired from cime.  The kids at Chubby's provided a playful group to run with who never did real crime and flat out did not like to fight.  What a relief.

The vote count for city council is on tap to be certified tomorrow morning.  We all anticipate the best for Nate Salazar and are shaping up for the run-off.  The thing thats nice about the run-off is that it is now one on one, nowhere to hide but in each candidate's own ability, and the news will be paying more attention now.

I think when I grow up I want to be like my son.
