Paul's reference to Tape Head Company brings me this morning.  I was at the Democrat Mass meeting for Disctrict 25 and ran into Duke who used to work at THC.  He was actually contratulating me on My Son's race for Salt Lake City School Board Precinct 4.  Our recollections brought many memories of those days.

Its nice to hear old Hippies say nice things about my Son.

Dale,

Yes, it's good to hear nice things about our children from others. Looks like I missed another meeting. O well.

The store I'm I trying to remember was between the Red Barn Drive-In and the Car Wash. Maybe, the store had a picture of Mighty Mouse on the sign maybe not? Larry Grobstein from East High School was the store owner. He showed me where the outlaw crew from THC broke into his store and painted their logo on the wall. I would hang out and shoot the breeze with Chad for hours. That's where I met all kinds of people, A guy riding a bicycle dressed in black said his name was Charlie Brown stopped in talked for while. Once two well dressed and respected business men. (pimps)  Parked there Cadillac Eldorado out front of the store on State Street. They were dress like a 1970 Disco Dancers with feathers on their hats. They did not want to buy anything. Only trade something for a stereo system for the Cadillac, One was a guy called Flash and the other was Roadrunner. That's where I first met Honda Wanda. Then she shows up at Quick's looking for motorcycle parts a week later. Don't know why? Leo laughed. We didn't have any Honda parts at Quicks to help her. So he sent her over to the Honda store on State Street. (what was the name of that store anyway?)

Growing up in Salt Lake City in the 70's Wow!

Growing up, in my neighborhood there was a guy who was a manager for Lagoon Corp which also owned the old Terrace Ballroom downtown.  He got me a job there (and also at the Patio Gardens at Lagoon) where I worked as an usher for concerts, so I got to see most of the bands that came there for free - including the Doors, Beach Boys, Cream, Eric Burdon and ther Animals, Chicago, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, Tommy James, Santana, It's a Beautiful Day and many others.  Every time I hear the music from one of these groups I have reflections of the sights (the wild light shows), sounds and especially the smells (a mix of patchouli oil and pot) that wafted through the air at those those concerts.  I attribute my partial hearing loss I have today to my frequent attendance at those blaringly loud, small-venue concerts.

Also, McLelland and I used to frequent THC, where you could bring your own records and transfer them on to 8-track tapes which we would play in my '66 Chevy Impala SS for "mood music" during our hot double dates!!  We were too cheap (broke) to shell out the $$ to buy factory produced tapes.

Ahhhhh. . . . .  MEMORIES!!!

Jeff.  If I remember we were so broke that we would go golf ball diving at that old par three course I can not remember its name     We would go late after they closed and walk around in the pond feeling for balls with our feet

Alan, that old course on North Temple was Demmans Par 3.  I think I came home with a garbage bag full of balls that night!!  I still have an old ball with The Demmans logo on it!!  I also remember the time our senior when you and I sluffed and played 36 holes up at Wasatch - we walked the whole thing carring our clubs.  Ahh . . .to have that stamina again!!

Allen Gehrke

Jeff. I hope you are not playing any of those balls now even if we had enough to last 50 years.  That 36 hole golf day was lots of fun.  I would love to do it again but I am definitely ridding  this time.

Wow Paul, why didn't I run into you.  Honda Wanda helped us rebuild John Crawford's honda 250 in 1968 and Charley Brown was one of our party buddies.  I don't remember the golf course but I do remember the little shop by the Red Barn. Steve Smith, Doug's olrder brother, bought a sound system at the shop you're talking about with Mickey Mouse in the window.  I don't remeber the name either.

BTW I walked into Quicks the first time back then because it was the favorite bar of a girl I was dating.

Dale,

Whatever happened to John Crawford? I was hoping you would remember the name of that tape store... (Yep! I am retired now days and I don't care if ever go to another meeting ever again. To tell ya the truth.  Once a Dinosaur. Always a Dinosaur, I guesswink)

By the By. Quick's is not a bar... (that's very funny)   Quick's Service Inc. is where I worked from Jr. High School, High School for years after that.  I am a certified Kawasaki Motorcycle Mechanic who worked out the bugs out on the 1969 Kawasaki F21M 238cc Greenstreak. I made the motorcycle go Very fast for the Kawasaki Racing Team. (It was a design flaw with the new motor)

BTW: I have found few good golf balls at Forest Dale Golf Course and sold them to the golfer when I was a young man too.

Jeff, you're a Lucky Duckie to see all the great Rock in Roll groups. I truly envy you. What great Gig!

Hay Paul, I do remember now, Quick's service.  In those days Duffy's Bar was named Quicks.  I was drinking on a fake draft card back then.

John Crawford died several years ago.  He took his own life.

I was into motorcycles for some years and even owned a Kawasaki in college.  Interesting that you would find the design flaw that enabled the bikes to go faster.  I pretty much lost my nerve when I piled up my Suzuki into the back end of a Mustang.  The bike never ran again and it took me some time to walk again.

I believe the sound shop on state was next door to Chris Drayer Harley Davidson wasn't it?

03/27/18 04:23 PM #3589

Paul Michelsen

Yes, Chris Drayer Harley Davidson was there, then a alleyway... Your on the right track now.

My head is starting to hurt, just thinking about it... Sad news about John. Things in our lives do change if we want them too or not. Thanks for the help.

PS: If ya remember let me know!

OK Paul,  I tried your profile to see what you looked like back when but you''ve overloaded your page with music.I'll need to find the old yearbook to see if I remember you.

So all you will know i was an avid Beach Boys fan through the 60s.  Two concerts at lagoon  and one at the Terrace Ballroom. Yes Jeff, I too envy you for the musicians you saw at Lagoon. We were working at Little America in High School and Val Smith, Kibb Smith's older brother, was bartender for the Beach Boys party after thier concert.  It changed my impression ob the Boys.  I guess I liked them better.

I never spent much time around Quicks until I got into college.  I knew the Boones and Dumases spent time there as I ran into one of our classmages there one night who was on a date with one of the brothers.

John Crawford was one of three friends I lost within a week three years ago.  John's choices in life were always fun but never beneficial for a normal life.  I do miss the man.

BTW - Happy birthday Rod Jones.

For those of you who are trying to think of the music store down the street from Red Barn on Ninth South, RK Sound was on the West side of State Street in that area.

Johnny Carlson's Living Room was down the street on the East side of the street on Seventh South and State Street.

For those of you who are wondering about the music store on State Street, it was RK Sound located on the West side of the street just North from the old Red Barn.

John Carlson's Living Room was down the street on the East side of State Street and 7th South.

Thank you Coral.  Nothing was coming to mind after all the parties and all the years.

Thank you for the memories Jeff.  Did some time at all of those places.

Carolyn, I started grade school at Sumner Elementary. Lived at 755 South 200 East at the time. The house I lived in was tore down in the '60s.

Hi Woody

I lived in a red brick house with a green duplex on the left  and a empty lot on the right. I also went to Sumner. I moved to central city in '62. Started there in the 5th grade. Had Scandland in 6th and Willardsen in the 7th. Can't remember 5th maybe Handford. My mom lived there until '76

My house is also torn down. I know farther down the street there are a group of apartments. I'm trying to picture where your house was. Thanks for bringing up some good memories.

Hi guys. I lived on Tribly Place. 725 S. 300 e. Only one duplex on the court.
Okay Mickelson. I remember you now. You're still as you were. Way to go.

Loved the memories, Jeff.  Lots of fun and special times in those places!

The Rat Fink memories are more recent.  We love visiting the Big Daddy Ed Roth museum during the Rat Fink Reunion in Manti.  If you''ve never seen it, it's worth the trip to see his many, many creations besides what we are most familiar with. It's only open during the annual  'reunion' and by appointment but our motercycle group go down often.

Did you happen to notice the price of the ticket for THE DOORS concert at Lagoon's Patio Gardens?  How much would you be willing to pay today for the opportunity to see that concert live and up-close today?
