I got to meet Roy Rogers with Trigger once.  It was actually at Grand Central for some big appearance. (Let me clarify that they were outside in the parking lot) I was probably only 9 or 10 years old at the time, but Roy Rogers was my heart-throb... and boy was I ever jealous of Dale Evans!  Trigger was a close second in the heart-throb department!

OMG what am I doing up at this time of night? Shhh don't tell anyone I was up this early it will ruin my bad reputation.

Ok I'm usually not a name dropper but I met Walt Disney, Grizzly adams shook my hand on the way to the out-house. Jimmy Dean hugged me, man was he tall I turned around and looked him straight in the belt buckle. I had my 2 yr. old son with me, and all the way home he threatened to tell his daddy that a strange man hugged me.

Roy Rodgers shook my hand and let me pet his horse at the days of 47 Rodeo.  And, I ate breakfast with Michael Jordan.

We were really lucky to have so many great role models when we were kids.  I'm sorry our kids didn't have any. When I was in the Holy cross hospital Julia pushed my wheelchair out in the rose garden. She asked me who the statue was and when I told her Madonna she thought I was really crazy. Maybe I should have taken my kids to the Greek Orthodox church more than just  going on easter?

Anyway my favorite role models from S.L.UT. were Bob Welti and Admiral Bernie does anyone else know who they were?

Bob Welti was the KSL weatherman eons ago - still my favorite nerdy weatherman. And it cracks me up every time I see Paul James on his Intellibed or whatever mattress it is looking so elegant (NOT!) sticking golf balls into the spaces in it. Dick Nourse was around forever.

I actually got to be one of the group of kids one day on Admiral Bernie's show. But then it might have been Fireman Frank's Show. I think that I wanted to be on Captain Kangaroo but then it turned out to be the local show. Clarabelle the Clown weirded me out anyway.

Loved the KSL 5 pic, Charlotte...what a great crew!  And your link brought back lots of great young childhood memories!  I was on Romper Room after the parade, the year I was their Princess for the Children's 24th of July parade. (How the heck I got that job...I have no idea, being only 4 years old- I don't recall why)  They worked hard to teach me how to wave like a princess.  Hard stuff for a youngster of that age...and a little more 'girly' than I cared to be.

When my mother was acting director of development for the Utah Symphony for 2 or 3 years (in the early 80's) I got to meet a lot of the stars that came for different fun raising concerts.  My favorites were probably Dorthy Hamill(we attended the Tab Choir broadcast and breakfast) and Robert Redford (a regular, who my mother referred to as "Bobby") for a luncheon.  I really had always loved Robert Redford in movies so I was psyched to meet him, but kind of disappointed to see how short he was in real life.  Really nice to sit and talk with, though.  Lots of neat opportunities, because of mother's job.

Here's another Salt Lake Celebrity - Eugene Jelesnik. He did a local talent show on the TV (early American Idol?). Remember the open theater/bandstand at Liberty Park? He would do a concert weekly (monthly?) there that was free. He'd pick a few kids from the audience to come up and pretend to lead the band (symphony?). I was picked one time and my mother was in a panic because she thought I had been kidnapped. This was probably when I was 4 or 5. This picture is of him at the Salt Palace - remember the OLD Salt Palace?

Gloria, do you remember what Admiral Bernie did before he was on KSL as Admiral Bernie?

He was on channel 4 hosting an early morning children's cartoon program as Captain Casey.  He had a hand held puppet named Pixie.  The call letters for channel 4 at that time were KCPX so it was Captain Casey (KC) and PiXie - KCPX.  When Bernie Calderwood left channel 4 to go to channel 5 they could not continue to call him Casey as that would be stepping on the toes of channel 4.  They just used his real nickname of Bernie and gave him a boost in rank to Admiral and Admiral Bernie was on the air.  Bernie Calderwood has passed on now.  The cancer he had finally took its toll.

Wow, Randall!  Good call! I had remembered they were the same guy, but I didn't ever remember realizing why he changed names.  It is so great to remember those great times as a youngster.

Neat photo's too, Charlotte!

Thanks Glo. Does anyone remember when Saratoga had hundreds of spider webs on all of the rides - complete with live spiders ! I couldn't believe it ( they were shut down within a month or so, however).  Buzz, how's that drywall business doing ?  Au revoir

Buzz just how often did you do drugs in the 60's lol

After you hang that drywall what do you cover the seams with?

04/09/11 03:56 AM #675

Candida Bettinson (Jensen)

Wow, Paul...If you delivered papers like this, you might owe the customers some $$$!

04/09/11 07:48 AM #676

Ernest "Buzz" Fontana

Wow Gloria,

Like I'm suppose to remember that. I think the "motto" back then was " so many drugs, so little time" And if I did hang any drywall I would cover the "joints" (no pun intended) with the newspapers that Paul thought he was delivering. No wonder you didn't get paid. Ha Ha Ha.

I was lucky enough to meet and talk to in his dressing room Hal Holbrok. Few of us from Mrs. A drama class went to see his show about Mark Twain and the stage manager asked if we would like to go back and talk to Mr Holbrok? That was a dumb queston to ask high school kids. It was so neet to stand there and look at his make up job. wow.

Am sure you recall Fireman Frank. How many of you know what breed of dogs he use to raise??

Hint you can find them at fire stations. Dalmatian of course. LoL.  My Dad use to show them for Ron back in the 60's. So once and while we would have Fireman Frank stop by to pick up his dogs. I always remember him as being a tall thin and very friendly guy.

All you guys and gals are great. Buzz, is that why they call you buzz? Roy Rogers sidekick was Gabby Hayes. Souvall did have a seatbelt attached to the bench and would often forget he had it on when jumping up as he was wont to do. And you are making me hungry! Wards market on 21st and 3rd east, Jonny Quongs Tiki hut downtown, Litza's, to name a few. I remember cripples. Cherry Cokes at the drug store on 4th e and 17th so. Man, I may start crying any minute. You folks are all great! We have a most excellent bunch of classmates. Everybody stay happy. Buck

Bob TY for your good wishes, I think I'm too old to manage happy, is it ok if I just shoot for not being grumpy?

Dave Porter

Ron Ross, aka, Fireman Frank is still thin and tall and friendly. He lives in Ogden and is a member of the Salt Lake City Letter Carriers Band of which I was a member for 42 years before retiring two years ago. He plays the trombone and piano and is a real asset to the band. Still a character.

Now, Bernie Calderwood...When I was working for Senator Hatch in the late 80s I had a call from him and was so excited because he along with Fireman Frank were big time celebrities to me. I was able to help Bernie with a government issue. When I first talked to him I called him Admiral Bernie and I could tell he was so happy that someone remembered him that way.
